About Volvo 850 1st Generation

Volvo 850 was, at least in its home country Sweden, a minor sensation at its launch in 1991. It was presented as the successor of the ageing 240-series, which in turn was a development of the Volvo 140 which was presented already in 1966. The new model had front wheel-drive, transverse engine and five cylinders. On top of that it was quite nimble and surefooted on the road, as opposed to its tail happy predecessor. It looked like a Volvo, albeit a lot less chunky in the design. The 850 was popular in Sweden as well as on export markets, and was very successful in racing, not least in the BTCC in the UK. The model was succeeded in 1997 by S70/V70 which in large was 850's with major facelifts.
