About Volkswagen Golf A1 (Typ 17)
When the Golf was introduced in 1974 as replacement for VW Type 1, "Beetle", it was a huge leap forward for Volkswagen. With sharp design by Giugiaro, the engine in the front as well front wheel drice and a hatchback body it soon became a role model for its entire class of cars, medium sized hatchbacks. In 1975, Golf GTI saw the light of day, that too being an icon in the motor industry, using the same recipe as Ford had in the Escort RS2000 and the Escort Mexico, a large engine in a relatively small car, paired with uprated suspension. Golf Mk1 was produced relatively unchanged until 1983 when Mk 2) was introduced.
