First generation Polo was an Audi 50 with Volkswagen badges, developed by Audi NSU, although largely in the same manner as the then new Volkswagen Golf. Volkswagen Derby, a saloon version of Polo was presented in 1977. Audi 50 and VW Polo were sold alongside until 1978 when the Audi model was discontinued, as Audi were to focus more on larger upmarket cars. The first generation of Polo was available with four cylinder engines with 0,9, 1,1 and 1,3 litres, the largest producing 59 bhp.
